The current Coaching Staff led by Rich Rio has achieved unprecedented success winning 7 Conference Titles, qualifying for the state playoffs 9 times, and appearing in the Prep Bowl as the Chicago Public League Champion in 2004. Coach Rio has won 75% of his games as head coach with an average of 8.5 victories per season. Coach Rio and staff have a combined 9 year record of 76 wins and 31 losses. Coach Rio was also honored by the Chicago Bears as Coach of the Week in 2004. See below for more details.
Even more important than his won/loss records, Rich Rio has successfully led the effort to completely refurbish the athletic facilities at Lane. Working with the Lane Tech Fields of Dreams, the Lane Tech Century Foundation, and the Lane Tech Football Booster Club, Lane has received donations from the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, Chicagp Public Schools and DePaul University to create a legacy that all future Lane students can enjoy.

For nine weeks during the 2004 high school football season, the Bears selected one high school football head coach as their "Coach of the Week" winner. This program was created to honor coaches who develop player football skills and knowledge, character and leadership, discipline, teamwork abilities and contributions to his program, players and community. Graduation rates, coaching technique, school and fan support and, most importantly, contributions to players' long-term success on and off the field are also included.Lane Football Coach Rich Rio was honored as "Coach of the Week" winner during Week 8 and was recognized at the Bears-Texans game on Sunday, December 19, 2004. He also received a $1,500 contribution to the school's football program and a framed certificate by Head Coach Lovie Smith. Coach Rio also attended a Bears practice and "chalk-talk" with Coach Smith.
